World Mental Health Day focuses on young people
How important is being happy? This Wednesday is World Mental Health Day. It is a special day when everyone gets to talk about how they feel. This year’s theme is “young people” — that’s you!
How do you feel today? Happy? Sad? Angry? Our feelings can have a big impact on our lives. For example, when we are happy we feel good. When we are sad, it is harder to enjoy things.
October 10 is World Mental Health Day. This year it is about young people.

“Mental health” is all about what is happening in your head. Everybody in the world has mental health, just as everybody has bodies which can be healthy or unhealthy.
You can keep your body healthy by exercising and eating the right foods. You can keep your mind healthy in the same way.
The most important way to do this is to talk about your feelings with friends or family. If you bottle your feelings up, they get worse and can be harder to control.
World Mental Health Day encourages people to talk about how they are feeling, especially if they are sad. How important is being happy?
It is very important! When we are happy we are able to learn more and make friends more easily. In a perfect world, everyone would be happy all the time.
Other feelings are just as important. Sometimes we are sad or worried for a good reason. That is part of living a normal life. As long as we talk about it, that is okay.
- Who is the best person to talk to about your feelings?
- As a class, list as many different feelings as you can think of. Then sort them into two lists: good feelings and bad feelings.
