Photo project inspires 76,000 young artists
Can anyone be an artist? Famous film-maker Steve McQueen has photographed 76,000 Year 3 children across London. He hopes the project will inspire them to become the artists of the future.
Steve McQueen is an Oscar-winning filmmaker. To inspire the next generation of artists, he has taken class portraits of more than 76,000 Year 3 pupils in London.
It was not an easy task: the photographers had to visit 80 schools every week! Now, the pictures are on display at the Tate Britain gallery.

McQueen thinks the project will encourage all young people to believe that they can achieve their dreams.
He believes that, currently, it is too hard for artists who are not wealthy and not white to be successful.
“I remember going to the National Portrait Gallery and the only black people I saw there were the guards,” said McQueen. “Art school was [… ] where I could achieve my goals and realise myself.”
The pictures of the classes have been put up on 600 billboards around London, where they will be seen by around 17 million people.
All the children in the photographs, plus 600 other pupils, will be able to visit the Tate Britain to learn more about art.
Can anyone become an artist?
No. Artists are born with a special talent. For example, they could be brilliant at drawing, or painting, or have an incredible imagination. Many more of us will never be truly artistic.
Of course, they can! Art is not about being born with talent: it is much more about hard work and believing in yourself. Some artists may be good at drawing, but others use photography or film to express themselves. Every artist is unique!
- What does it take to be an artist?
