‘Let children choose their own books’

Book worm: There are more than 20 books in the Wimpy Kid series.

Should children be allowed to read anything? Writer Jeff Kinney never says “no” to a book. He thinks that letting kids choose their own books helps them to enjoy reading.

What’s happening

Jeff Kinney is the author of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He says that parents should not tell their children which books to read.

He thinks it does not matter if a book seems too easy or too hard. The most important thing “is that reading is fun,” he says.

Some children like comics. Others like long stories. Jeff says children should discover what books they like on their own.

He thinks that choosing your own books makes you more likely to enjoy reading as you grow up.

Some people disagree. They say children learn more from books that are suitable for their age.

Do you think children should be allowed to read anything?

Some say…

No! Adults know what is best for us. They know which books will help us learn. We should listen to them.

Others think…

Yes! Everyone likes different books. It is silly to make children read certain books. That will make reading boring.
