Introducing... Marvel’s first female superhero

Power-up: Marvel boss Kevin Fiege says Captain Marvel is “the strongest character we’ve ever had.”

Are superheroes the best role models? Today, Marvel releases its first movie with a female lead. Captain Marvel has alien powers which make her stronger than Iron Man, Thor or Black Panther.

What’s happening

Since Iron Man came out in 2008, Marvel has released 20 superhero movies. Today, its 21st will hit the cinemas — and its first with a woman in the lead role.

Captain Marvel is the story of Carol Danvers, a woman with alien powers. She has super strength, she can blast energy and she can fly.

She is played by Brie Larson. She loves Danvers because she was “doing amazing things even before she had superpowers.”

Danvers was a US Air Force pilot. However, she has lost her memories of that life when the movie begins.

“As she gets to know herself […] she really achieves her true power,” says the film’s co-director Anna Boden.

Larson says Captain Marvel is a great role model for young girls.

Are superheroes the best role models?

Some say…

Yes! Watching heroes use superpowers to save the world can make us feel strong too. That is why it is fun to dress up like them — and why it is important to have female superheroes too.

Others think…

No. We will (probably) never have to save the world from evil aliens. The best role models are ordinary people who do brave things — like Carol Danvers before she is Captain Marvel.
